Beyond the Pen Writing is my main gig, but I wear a million other hats as well. My interests are vast and ever-growing so I definitely needed a section to squeeze some of these other parts of myself into. I'm nuts about the arts! I love to see beautiful art; I love to support talented artists; and I love to experiment with different types of art myself. I've always loved art but it's only within the last two years that I've considered the possibility that I might actually be counted as an artist myself. I don't know - the verdict is still out and I'm slowly becoming more comfortable sharing my work. My taste in music is as diverse and eclectic as everything else about me - it would be much easier listing music I dislike rather than music I do like. One of my favourite things to do is go to see live music - there's absolutely nothing like it. I'm a whore for singing and have just begun to relearn how to play the guitar - this is, of course, all in good fun and any dreams I harbour of rock stardom can wait till I'm fifty and everyone I know has gone deaf. I live in one of the most creative cities - it's crawling with artists, musicians, hackers, writers, and other such weirdos, so I feel very much at home here. I, unashamedly, love the internets and that is where I spend most of my free time. People may say that's not a good thing and it's no replacement for "real life," but most, if not all, of the things that make my life rich have come to me because of the internet. That is where I make my connections, find out what's out there in the world, where the proverbial party is at. I came on here in the late nineties, taught myself code and learned to use graphics programs and from there made myself a personal website, and that's when web design became one of my many hobbies. I've made many websites since then and went from there to the world of blogging. The internet is just a world of its own and yeah, I could live without it, but who wants to do that? Religion and Politics: the two unmentionables! I'm speak briefly on both these subjects because I'm passionate about both. Religion and I don't get along personally, but I'm not against religion per se: my belief is 'to each their own as long as no one is being harmed in any way. Unfortunately, many religions do a lot of harm. My other problem with religion is that it is often cult-like and uses guilt and fear to control people. Also, religion is a box and I find it difficult to be put into a box since the nature of life is to grow and learn and it's not really possible for anyone to be exactly the same as another person. Boxes are constricting and prevent evolution. That being said, I've always been a very spiritual person and think spirituality is an essential in anyone's life - it's all about balance. The Buddhists have it pretty right on, that's not a religion though and perhaps that's the reason they know what they're doing. Politically, I went from being a liberal to a new democrat to green and now I have just taken myself completely out of all party affiliations because I've realized a few things: changing parties will not change the way things are run: they are all just different pieces of the same very unpalatable pie and no matter what slice you get, it doesn't change the recipe or the baker. Without a complete upturning of government as we know it, real change is just an illusion. The world is run the way it is run for a reason and the 1% have us wrapped around their little fingers. There is so much wrong with the way the world works: with government and its even bigger counterpart, corporation. Therefore, I think voting is a waste of time (spoil your ballot if you have to do something) and harbour dreams of someday seeing the majority of the public not vote - because why vote for a lesser evil? Real change is gonna be a lot more difficult than casting a vote. If I had to choose any affiliation though, I'd put my support behind the Canadian Action Party. I love to read. Most writers do. This is what I'm currently reading:
To be continued... always.
